Primary Gas

Primary gas prices have dipped from its 2014 upward trend as record production increased from the North American fracking boom, and a cooler than normal summer which lowered cooling demand and increased primary gas in storage. Prices have moved to a range far below the trend line which may provide for an excellent opportunity to lock in long-term prices. Several factors suggest prices will move upwards:

  1. As a result of both oil and gas prices dipping, drilling rig counts have dropped by 50%. Oil and gas companies have scaled back production.
  2. LNG exports to both Europe and Asia begin this year and will continue to increase through 2020 thus reducing supply.
  3. Coal plant closures begin to accelerate as of April, 2015 and will be replaced, for the most part, by primary gas.
  4. Fracking side effects continue to mount as evident by the number of earthquakes in Oklahoma which have now exceeded California. Bans on fracking have taken place worldwide.
  5. It appears that primary gas prices have bottomed out and have only one way to go – up!
